Over the last several decades, psychotherapists have used different names to describe clients who fail to make progress. This presentation will explore the labels used to identify such clients, what these labels tell us about such clients, and the conclusions psychotherapists make regarding the lack of progress. The research that supports and challenges the concept of personality disorders and suggestion to redefine Personality Disorders in DSM-5 will be presented to understand the present state of knowledge. The outcome research for Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavior Therapy with personality disorders will also be reviewed. A new model of treatment will be presented that includes personality awareness, self and radical acceptance, and adaptation.
