Overview:

Changes made to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria will be presented and discussed in this workshop. This workshop will also provide a description of changes pertaining to the chapter organization in DSM-5, the multiaxial system, the introduction of dimensional assessments, controversies and challenges, and likely future directions. The purpose of this workshop is to provide the mental health professional with a working knowledge and understanding of the new diagnostic system, including changes from DSM-IV to DSM-V, and will provide a useful guide to the ways in which these changes require an adaptation of day-to-day clinical practice.

Learning objectives:

1. Participants will develop an understanding of the evolution of the DSM system.
2. Participants will develop a working knowledge of the changes made from DSM-IV to DSM5.
3. Participants will develop an understanding of the modifications in day-to-day practice that these changes necessitate.
4. Participants will develop an understanding of the numerous controversies that the DSM5 has engendered.
5. Participants will develop an understanding of the challenges and future direction of this diagnostic system.

Schedule:

1-1:30 – History and evolution of DSM
1:30-2:00 – Origins of DSM5, it’s structural changes and its connection to psychological science.
2:00-2:15 – Break
2:15- 4:30 – DSM5 content changes and implications for clinical practice
