On January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act went into effect in which all healthcare providers are required to notify clients of their federal rights and protections against “surprise billing.” Under this act, health care providers are required to provide clients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. According to this act:
- Before scheduling an appointment, you have the right to inquire and receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.
- You should receive your Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your service.
- If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
- Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or additional information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate or the dispute process, please visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call the No Surprises Help Desk at 800-985-3059.
