3 Contact Hours/3 Continuing Education Credits will be provided by Albert Ellis Institute upon completion of the workshop.

Target Audience: Psychologists, Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Graduate Students

Instructional Level: Introductory  (Basic knowledge of REBT is recommended)

Description:

This workshop aims to equip REBT therapists with evidence-based strategies to address meaning in life within their therapeutic practice. Drawing from the latest research and Dr. Vos’s extensive work in the field, participants will learn how to integrate meaning-centered approaches with REBT techniques. The session will start by giving an overview of the types of questions that clients may ask about meaning in life, as research shows that the majority of clients asking for therapeutic support have explicit or implicit questions about meaning. We will subsequently explore how it can be helpful to use REBT principles and techniques to help clients with their quest for meaning, for example, by helping them develop more helpful and realistic attitudes toward life. Subsequently, the workshop will explore common misconceptions about meaning in life, and give an overview of the research field on meaning, including an introduction of the six universal types of meaning and three approaches to life. We will discuss research showing that clients benefit the most from having between four and five examples of meaning in life, which they discovered via critically listening to their intuition, and focusing on social and larger types of meaning. Increasing evidence is also emerging for the key role of a sense of meaning, affect regulation, and functioning of the nervous system. The last, and largest, part of the session will be dedicated to discussing a systematic treatment for meaning-oriented cognitive behavior therapy, which integrates insights from REBT and meaning-oriented/existential therapies.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify different types of meaning-related questions commonly presented by clients in therapeutic settings;
  2. Apply REBT principles and techniques to help clients develop more helpful and realistic attitudes toward life in their quest for meaning;
  3. Differentiate between the six universal types of meaning and three approaches to life, as supported by current research in the field;
  4. Implement a systematic treatment approach for meaning-oriented cognitive behavior therapy that integrates REBT and existential therapy principles.
