Description:

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an evidenced-based intervention for treating a variety of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.  During this workshop, participants will learn how to conduct a proper functional assessment, collaborate with clients on constructing relevant exposure lists, implement appropriate exposure and response prevention exercises, and identify and gradually eliminate safety behaviors. While ERP is proven to be effective, client compliance with the exposure protocol can be quite challenging.  Participants will learn effective ways to utilize psychoeducation, motivational enhancement, and cognitive restructuring based on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) principles and practice to assist clients prior to, during, and after ERP in order to maximize treatment outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the theoretical rationale for ERP;
  2. List the disorders that ERP has been proven to be an effective intervention;
  3. Utilize cognitive strategies to maximize effectiveness of ERP;
  4. Plan and implement effective exposure sessions.
