Target Audience: Psychologists, Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Graduate Students

Instructional Level: Introductory to Advanced

Description:

This workshop is focused on the understanding of suicide—what it is, what it is not, and how we can recognize the pain behind it. Mental health professionals will be informed about the role they can play in creating safer, more supportive environments. Participants will also have an opportunity to become aware of crucial differences between a genuine desire to die, wanting to escape unbearable emotional suffering, hopelessness, or a sense of isolation. A review of the latest research and how to integrate the findings with current evidence-based clinical interventions will be presented. Special attention will be focused on the importance of applying principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) to address cognitions, emotions, and behaviors in clients at risk of suicide and helping clinicians feel more compassionate and connected to their clients’ experiences.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what clients experience in a suicidal crisis.
  • Describe how to listen without judgment to a suicide narrative presented by the clients.
  • Plan a case formulation with a client at risk of suicide.
  • Explain how to integrate research findings into an evidence based clinical intervention.

Schedule:

9:30 am-10:30 am (EST): Building understanding of suicide, its prevalence, and risk factors
10:30 am – 11:45 am (EST): Signs, Assessment, and Intervention
11:45-12:30 (EST): Coping, Healing, and Relapse Prevention
12:30-12:45 (EST): Evaluations
